The Carnarvon Heritage Group welcomed the Regional Development Minister Don Punch to Carnarvon today to view their plans to revitalise the Heritage Precinct.

The Heritage Precinct, which surrounds the historic One Mile Jetty, is rich in history and houses, many priceless museum artefacts, and infrastructure from the beginning of the 20th century.

The Carnarvon Heritage Precinct also comprises of the lighthouse keeper's cottage museum, shearing hall of fame, water tower, remnants of the Carnarvon tramway

and a memorial to Australia's worst naval disaster - the sinking of the HMAS Sydney.

The funding will update the Heritage Precinct Masterplan, improve visual amenity, drive tourism, and conserve the remaining elements of the port.

This funding, along with the $2.78 million for the Carnarvon Heritage Precinct One Mile Jetty Interpretive Centre, confirms the importance of this historical asset to the WA Government.

Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister DonPunch:

"Carnarvon's history evolved around the One Mile Jetty and many people in this State have strong links to the area thanks to the jetty. It is important that the history of the region is preserved for future generations.

"I commend the Carnarvon Heritage Group for their passion, and their vision for a high quality family friendly attraction will help drive visitors to the Gascoyne and create economic opportunities.

"It will create a community, educational, recreational and cultural resource that celebrates Carnarvon's One Mile Jetty and its important role in the Gascoyne and history of Western Australia."
